Al Capone Is Born
Al Capone was born January 17, 1899, to Gabriele and Teresina Capone. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Al's parents and seven other siblings, were italian immigrants, who moved to America for a better life. Al's dad was a barber, and his mother was a seamstress.
Capone's Childhood
Capone was smart, and did well at Brooklyn Elementary School. However, he had to repeat the 6th grade. Around this point, he started to play hooky, and would hang around at the Brooklyn docks. Onhe day, after the principal beat Al for hitting a teacher, he never went back to the school. After dropping out of school, his family moved to Park Slope, a Brooklyn neighborhood. Here is where Al met his future wife, Mae Coughlin, and his soon-to-be gang leader, the notorious Johhny Torrio.
Capone met Johnny Torrio, who ran a small illegal gambling operation. Al started to run small errands for Torrio. Torrio left for Chicago in 1909, but kept in contact with Capone. Capone stuck to employment, working in a factory, cutting paper. He was a little active in gangs, but mostly stuck to his real job. In 1918, Capone married Mae Coughlin soon after the birth of Albert Francis, their son. In 1920, Al moved to Chicago, shortly after the death of his father, to work with Johnny Torrio.
